Airtel Money launched its Bizna Wallet on Monday, directly challenging Safaricom’s M-Pesa Pochi la Biashara in a bid to capture a larger share of Kenya’s mobile money market. The new product allows customers to pay small-scale traders without incurring any fees, a move designed to attract merchants and reduce Safaricom’s dominance. In response, Safaricom revised its tariffs on Saturday, halving charges for payments to business tills and paybills, and making Pochi la Biashara transactions under Sh200 free. The price war underscores the growing importance of mobile money as a revenue driver, with M-Pesa generating Sh182.7 billion in Kenya last year.
