Kenya's electricity imports from Ethiopia and Uganda have overtaken local wind generation, reaching 813.94 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) between January and May, compared to wind output of 736.8 million kWh. This marks a 25.1% increase in imports year-on-year, driven primarily by Ethiopia, which supplied 675.89 million kWh—over 83% of total imports—up 29.2% from the previous year. Uganda contributed an additional 137.02 million kWh. The trend underscores Kenya's growing dependence on regional power as domestic demand rises faster than supply, narrowing the surplus between local generation and sales to 489.4 million kWh from 646.9 million kWh.
