U.S. antisemitism envoy Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun has called on Canada to take stronger action against rising anti-Jewish hatred, including revoking visas and expanding terrorism listings. During a visit to Ottawa, Kaploun highlighted a sharp increase in hate crimes, with Canadian police reporting 788 incidents targeting Jews in 2025, up from 492 in 2021. He noted recent attacks on Jewish-owned bakeries in Toronto and gunfire at the American consulate, criticizing what he described as a muted government response. Kaploun compared the situation to 1933 Germany under the Third Reich, though University of Toronto professor Doris Bergen cautioned that such analogies can distract from addressing current threats.
