A new report from NFP reveals that 41% of workers aged 55 and older expect Social Security to be their main retirement income source, a figure that rises from just 12% for workers under 35. This trend is echoed in the 2026 Retirement Confidence Survey from EBRI, where 44% of workers aged 55-64 see Social Security as a major income source, compared to 32% of those aged 25-34. Retirement experts warn that Social Security, which replaces only about 40% of pre-retirement income on average, is not designed to be a sole income source. Jessica Johnston of the National Council on Aging emphasizes that relying solely on Social Security is "more than likely to not be sufficient."
