New ropeways aim to save wildlife in Bangladesh’s fragmented habitats 11.08.2026

Bangladesh's Forest Department has installed five ropeway bridges over the Mymensingh-Tangail Highway N401, which cuts through Madhupur National Park, to reduce wildlife roadkill. The 8,436-hectare park, the largest deciduous forest in Bangladesh, supports 151 wildlife species, but heavy vehicle traffic frequently kills animals, especially rhesus macaques. The nylon-rope bridges, each 30 meters long and hung over 6 meters above the highway, are designed to provide safe crossings for arboreal species like capped langurs, Indian civets, and fishing cats. The project cost 625,000 takas (about $5,000) and marks the Forest Department's first such initiative.
