NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has acknowledged a significant data breach involving the transmission of sensitive medical data of transplant patients over an unencrypted pager network. The BBC investigation revealed that NHSBT sent names, dates of birth, and details about organs being offered or needed to hospital transplant teams via pagers, which are not encrypted. This practice continued despite a 2019 directive from then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock to phase out pagers by 2021. NHSBT expressed deep regret, reported the breach to the Information Commissioner, and has since stopped sending patient data through this method.
