Sicily cable supplied a third of Malta’s electricity in 2025 15.08.2026

The Sicily-Malta interconnector supplied 33.5% of Malta's total electricity distribution in 2025, up from 32.4% in 2024, according to Enemalta plc figures. Despite this increased reliance on imported power, renewable energy accounted for only a provisional 9.8% of the interconnector mix, a modest rise from 8% in 2024. The remaining imported electricity was largely generated from non-renewable sources, including natural gas (68.4%), coal (9.2%), nuclear energy (4.6%), and petroleum products (0.9%). This means over 80% of imported electricity originated from fossil fuels or nuclear power.
