The Russian Climate Case, filed four years ago by activists including Yukaghir elder Vyacheslav Shadrin, argued that the Russian government failed to meet its international climate obligations. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled the case inadmissible in June without providing reasoning, surprising plaintiffs who noted similar cases had been considered. Plaintiff Arshak Makichyan, stripped of his Russian citizenship in 2022, believes the decision was political, reflecting reluctance to confront Russia on climate issues.
