‘Humiliated’: UK store pauses AI scanning after false shoplifting accusation 17.08.2026

Sainsbury’s has temporarily suspended the use of AI-powered facial recognition technology, known as Facewatch, in its East Dulwich store following a false shoplifting accusation against customer Matt Arnold. The 46-year-old comedy promoter was buying supplies for a standup event when store managers approached him, citing an earlier incident, and asked him to leave. Arnold described feeling “embarrassed, mortified, and humiliated” as he was escorted out, noting that staff seemed to blindly follow the machine’s orders without questioning the alert.
