In Episode 224 of This Week In Space, hosts Rod Pyle and guest co-host Rick Jenet welcome Dr. David Kring from the Universities Space Research Association's Lunar and Planetary Institute to discuss the Artemis Program's ambitious lunar exploration plans. The episode focuses on the scientific objectives and logistical hurdles of sending astronauts to the Moon's south pole, a region described as a "harsh mistress" due to its extreme conditions. Kring provides expert insights into the key questions facing mission planners: where to land, what scientific investigations to prioritize, and how to mitigate risks such as temperature extremes, rugged terrain, and limited sunlight.
