Belgium's King Philippe and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot have stated they cannot do more to evacuate 13 Gaza students who won scholarships at Belgian universities, yet other European countries have shown it is possible. A Dutch diplomat told EUobserver that extracting "several dozen" Gaza students via Jordan required only a "limited diplomatic effort," while the UK evacuated over 100 Gazan students for the 2026/2027 academic year. The students' hopes were initially raised when the Royal Palace highlighted their case with Prévot in July, but were dashed on August 10 when the ministry said no adjustments could remove the main obstacle of leaving Gaza.
