Let July 20 probe into Delhi protest kick off: Supreme Court on plea to widen remit | India News 26.08.2026

The Supreme Court on Tuesday stated that the five-member high-powered enquiry committee (HPEC), led by former judge Justice R Subhash Reddy, should be permitted to conduct its independent investigation into allegations of excessive force during the July 20 protest in Delhi. This directive came as petitioners sought the committee's reconstitution and a broader probe into the alleged involvement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, and other senior officials. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant assured that the court would monitor the process, stating, "Whosoever will work, they will work under the direct supervision of this court." The court urged petitioners to allow the committee to begin its work and raise any concerns as the inquiry proceeds.
