Energy supply slowly returns to Gozo after first cable fault repaired 29.08.2026

MaltaToday

Enemalta announced that energy supply is slowly returning to Gozo following the completion of repair works on the first of two cable faults in Xewkija. The company stated that power will be restored to localities in stages to ensure safety, while excavation work continues on the second fault located along the route on Comino. The outages began at 7pm on Friday, when two high-tension cables melted in Xewkija and Comino amid a heatwave, plunging the island into crisis. One of Gozo's two substations was also damaged. Enemalta deployed technical teams Friday night, locating the Xewkija fault late Friday and the Comino fault Saturday morning. Generators were mobilized for temporary relief in affected areas. Enemalta noted that repairing underground high-voltage cables is complex, as they can extend for kilometers, and additional resources are being deployed.
