A groundbreaking study published in the American Journal of Primatology introduces CapuchinAI, a system developed by Emory University anthropologist Dr. Marcela Benítez to study the cognition of wild white-faced capuchin monkeys in Costa Rica's Taboga Forest Reserve. The system uses AI facial recognition, a touchscreen, and automated food rewards to allow monkeys to voluntarily participate in cognitive experiments while remaining in their natural environment. Lead author Federico Sánchez Vargas adapted an existing facial recognition model to identify individual capuchins, enabling researchers to collect highly specific data and exclude monopolizers from tasks.
