‘Limit overshoot, peak, decline’: A new global goal for climate change? 08.09.2026

A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), titled "Limiting Overshoot," presents a stark reality: even under the most optimistic scenarios, the Earth will heat up by 1.8°C (3.2°F) above pre-industrial levels, surpassing the 1.5°C target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. The report, released in Nairobi, Kenya, outlines a best-case pathway of "overshoot, peak, and decline," where global temperatures will exceed the 1.5°C threshold "within the next few years," continue to rise, and then gradually cool back below that mark, hopefully by the end of the century. This scenario, however, carries immense risks, as every year above the threshold intensifies extreme weather, accelerates biodiversity loss, and threatens coastal cities and small island states with submersion.
