Cypriot fishermen battle invasive lionfish and turn them into a tavern delicacy 13.01.2026

Cypriot fishermen are increasingly encountering invasive lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, species that have migrated from the Red Sea due to warming Mediterranean waters and an expanded Suez Canal, posing a significant threat to indigenous fish stocks and local livelihoods. Veteran fisherman Photis Gaitanos notes a drastic decline in traditional catches like red mullet, impacting income for the estimated 150 professional fishermen in Cyprus. While the EU is funding compensation programs, paying fishermen to catch and incinerate toadfish and employing divers to cull lionfish, a new initiative aims to turn this ecological challenge into an economic opportunity by promoting lionfish as a tavern delicacy, with campaigns like #TasteTheOcean and local chefs developing recipes to encourage consumption.
