Life-extending prostate cancer drug to be offered to thousands in England 16.01.2026

Abiraterone, a life-extending prostate cancer drug, will soon be available to thousands of men in England on the NHS, a significant victory following a campaign by Prostate Cancer UK and patient Giles Turner. Previously only available for the most severe cases or in Scotland and Wales since 2023, the drug will now be offered to high-risk patients whose cancer has not yet spread, potentially saving hundreds of lives annually. The charity estimates 7,000 men a year will start this treatment, with some 1,470 avoiding progression and an estimated 560 lives saved. NHS England stated the drug will be available within weeks, with around 2,000 men diagnosed recently eligible if clinically beneficial. Abiraterone works by starving cancer cells of essential hormones.
