Microsoft gave FBI a set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects’ laptops: Reports 65d ago

Microsoft reportedly provided the FBI with BitLocker recovery keys to unlock three encrypted laptops as part of a federal investigation into fraud related to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program in Guam. This action highlights how BitLocker, a default full-disk encryption on many Windows computers, stores recovery keys in Microsoft's cloud, making them accessible to law enforcement with a warrant. While Microsoft states it receives an average of 20 such requests annually, experts like Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Green have raised concerns about the privacy implications and the potential for malicious actors to exploit compromised cloud infrastructure to gain access to these critical keys, even if physical access to the drives is still required.
