Portland mayor demands ICE leave city after federal agents gas protesters 01.02.2026

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has demanded that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) leave the city following an incident where federal agents deployed tear gas, pepper balls, and rubber bullets at a crowd of demonstrators, including children, outside an ICE facility on Saturday. Wilson characterized the daytime protest as peaceful, with the vast majority of attendees violating no laws or posing a threat. Witnesses described the scene as terrifying, with parents struggling to protect young children amidst the gas. The mayor stated that the federal government would be held accountable for its actions and announced plans to impose fees on detention facilities using chemical agents, asserting that ICE has lost legitimacy through its use of violence and trampling of the Constitution.
