China’s Lunar New Year travel rush begins with record 9.5 billion trips expected 10.02.2026

China's annual Lunar New Year travel rush, known as "chunyun," has commenced with an unprecedented 9.5 billion trips anticipated during the 40-day period surrounding the festival, which begins on February 17. This mass migration, the largest annual human movement globally, sees millions of workers, like Liu Zhiquan traveling 1,242 miles from Beijing to Chengdu, returning to their hometowns to celebrate with family. Economic concerns are influencing travel choices, with some opting for slower, more affordable train journeys over high-speed options. The festival, starting February 15, offers a rare extended holiday for many, emphasizing the importance of family reunions amidst demanding work schedules. Train travel accounts for 540 million trips, with air travel at 95 million, and the remainder by road.
