China's Spring Festival travel rush features more comfort, variety 20.02.2026

China's Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun, is seeing a significant evolution in traveler preferences, moving beyond traditional homebound journeys to embrace more comfortable and varied options. This year, railway authorities have expanded a pilot high-speed rail pet consignment service to 110 stations and 170 eligible trains, allowing owners like Dong Wenqi and Wang Jing to travel with their pets on routes such as Lanzhou to Xi'an. Beyond pet travel, families are opting for short-haul getaways and cruise vacations, with water passenger transport in Zhejiang Province exceeding 100,000 trips on Feb. 2, and Tianjin expecting around 1,000 passengers on a cruise to Jeju and Incheon. This shift reflects a growing demand for segmented, experience-driven consumption and upgraded public services, with a notable increase in family-based travel and a focus on convenience and tailored experiences.
