China experienced a record-breaking day for passenger travel on February 20, 2026, during its annual Spring Festival travel rush, known as "chunyun." The Ministry of Transport reported that daily cross-regional passenger trips surpassed 350 million, specifically reaching 352.999 million. This figure marks a significant 12.3 percent increase compared to the same day in the previous year's travel season, establishing a new historical high. The Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, commenced on February 17, with the official holiday period extending for nine days. The entire 40-day "chunyun" period, from February 2 to March 13, is projected to witness an unprecedented 9.5 billion inter-regional passenger trips, underscoring the immense scale of this human migration.
