Dame Stephanie Shirley's art collection to be sold 23.02.2026

The esteemed art collection of Dame Stephanie Shirley, a Kindertransport refugee and pioneering technology entrepreneur, will be auctioned by Dreweatts in Newbury next month. The collection, featuring modern art, sculpture, studio pottery, and furnishings from her Henley-on-Thames home, is being sold following her passing last August. All proceeds will benefit Autistica, the autism research and advocacy charity she established in 2004. Notable items include sculptures by Dame Barbara Hepworth and William Turnbull, each estimated to reach £150,000. Dame Shirley, born Vera Buchthal in Dortmund in 1933, was a significant figure in the computer industry and women's rights, founding Freelance Programmers and later donating much of her £150m fortune to charitable causes.
