USA Rugby to introduce 'open' gender category for trans athletes 28.02.2026

USA Rugby announced on Friday the introduction of a new "open" gender division, a move that aligns with U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) requirements and comes over a year after President Trump's executive order on men in women's sports. This new category will exist alongside the existing Men's and Women's Divisions, allowing any athlete, irrespective of their gender assigned at birth or gender identity, to participate in USA Rugby-sanctioned events. The organization's policy indicates that division status will be determined during registration, with athletes selecting their gender and providing a representation that they are Female if registering for the Women's Division, creating a rebuttable presumption that can be contested by USA Rugby. This development occurs as the USOPC explores sex testing options, with its Chief Medical Officer noting the use of SRY gene tests by other international federations.
