IISc and Pratiksha Trust launch moonshot project on brain co-processors 04.03.2026

On March 4, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) launched a significant moonshot project, funded by the Pratiksha Trust, to develop advanced brain co-processors. This multidisciplinary initiative aims to integrate neuromorphic hardware with AI algorithms to enhance or restore brain function, particularly for stroke survivors. The project will develop both implantable and non-invasive co-processors capable of decoding neural activity, processing it with AI, and re-encoding signals for neural stimulation or neurofeedback. The ultimate goal is to provide transformative neurological treatments, indigenize the development of medical technologies in India, and create open-source resources. The initial phase focuses on a non-invasive co-processor for sensorimotor feedback, with a subsequent phase targeting an invasive implant for restoring complex sensorimotor function after stroke.
