30 NUP solons back impeaching VP Sara 06.05.2026

Approximately 30 lawmakers from the National Unity Party (NUP) have indicated they will vote to transmit Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate, according to House Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno. Puno estimates around 180 House members, surpassing the required one-third threshold of 106 votes, are likely to support the impeachment, with support also coming from Lakas-CMD, Partido Federal, and NPC, alongside a majority of party-list representatives. Senior Deputy Majority Leader Lorenz Defensor expressed confidence in securing enough votes, citing the evidence presented and the Vice President's alleged failure to address allegations, noting the House Committee on Justice's unanimous 55-0 vote to find probable cause. This vote by the House is a procedural step to allow for a Senate impeachment trial, not a determination of guilt. Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson suggested appointing a dedicated impeachment manager, possibly Senator Francis Pangilinan, to manage a potential trial. The coalition 1Sambayan affirmed its support, deeming the proceedings a constitutional duty rather than political harassment. The Articles of Impeachment, approved by the House Committee on Justice, include charges of misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, graft, and corruption, and threats.
