2 dead after protest boats against U.S. base relocation capsize off Japan's Okinawa 17.03.2026

Two individuals, a 17-year-old high school student and a 71-year-old boat captain, died after two protest boats capsized off Henoko, Okinawa, on Monday morning. The vessels, carrying 21 people including 18 students on a peace education trip, overturned around 10:10 a.m. local time in waters near the construction site for the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. All 21 individuals were rescued from the sea, with four requiring hospitalization, two of whom were later confirmed deceased. The accident occurred despite clear skies, though a high surf advisory had been issued. This incident highlights ongoing opposition to the base relocation due to concerns over noise, safety, and environmental impact.
