Moldova issues 15-day alert after pollution from strike on Ukraine 2d ago

A Russian assault on a hydroelectric plant in southern Ukraine on March 7 has caused a significant oil spill and water pollution in the Dniestr River, impacting neighboring Moldova. This environmental crisis has led to the complete cutoff of water services in Balti, Moldova's second-largest city, affecting its 90,000 residents, and three other towns, with disruptions expected to last at least 12 more hours. President Maia Sandu attributed the contamination to Russia, declaring a 15-day environmental alert and condemning the attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydro station, stating Russia bears full responsibility. Schools have been closed, with students transitioning to online learning, and Moldova's foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador. The EU has offered support, with Commissioner Marta Kos emphasizing that Russia's war extends beyond Ukraine's borders.
