Rise in food order scams in Perak ahead of Hari Raya 10d ago

The Straits Times

Perak police are alerting caterers and pastry entrepreneurs to a surge in food order scams targeting festive preparations for Hari Raya, with losses surpassing RM300,000 in 2026. The modus operandi involves suspects placing large orders for treats like cookies and festive dishes, then requesting additional, often unavailable, items. They then direct the vendor to a supposed third-party contact who persuades the victim to make payments for these extras, after which both the suspect and the third-party become uncontactable, leaving victims with losses from both the original order and the fraudulent additional payments. Last year, 66 similar cases were recorded, with seven already reported this year.
