New study reveals surprising weight regain results after GLP-1s 18.03.2026

A new Cleveland Clinic study published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism offers a more optimistic outlook on weight regain after discontinuing GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. Analyzing real-world data from nearly 8,000 adults in Ohio and Florida who used semaglutide or tirzepatide for three to 12 months, researchers found that patients did not experience significant weight regain in the year following cessation. Those treated specifically for obesity lost an average of 8.4% of their body weight and only regained 0.5% on average. This contrasts with previous clinical trials and is attributed to patients often restarting medication or transitioning to alternative treatments, including lifestyle modification programs, rather than being left without support.
