Pit viper among new species discovered in cave in Cambodia 24.03.2026

Researchers have discovered multiple new and rare species, including a florescent-turquoise pit viper and a flying snake, within previously unexplored limestone caves in Cambodia's Battambang province. This multi-year biodiversity study, conducted by Fauna & Flora Cambodia and the country's ministry of environment from November 2023 to July 2025, surveyed over 60 caves across 10 karst hills. These isolated karst formations, historically understudied, act as unique habitats where species evolve independently. The discovery highlights the vulnerability of these ecosystems, which are threatened by human activities like quarrying and logging, with less than 1% globally being legally protected, putting many undiscovered species at risk of extinction.
