Nepal’s former leader arrested over deaths during Gen Z protests 28.03.2026

Nepal's former prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli, was arrested on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Kathmandu, along with his home minister Ramesh Lekhak, as authorities investigate their alleged negligence in preventing deaths during anti-corruption protests by Gen Z activists last September. The arrests follow a recommendation by a Nepali panel that investigated the violence, which resulted in the deaths of 76 people over two days and led to Oli's resignation. Oli, 74, was taken to the Kathmandu Police Office and later transferred to a hospital, while his lawyer deemed the arrest illegal. The panel specifically held Oli responsible for failing to halt firing that killed at least 19 protesters on the first day, with the subsequent public anger contributing to the Rastriya Swatantra Party's election victory.
