Nepal’s former leader arrested over deaths during Gen Z protests 14h ago

Former Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and his home minister, Ramesh Lekhak, were arrested on Saturday in Kathmandu following a recommendation by an investigative panel to prosecute them for negligence related to the deaths of 76 people during Gen Z anti-corruption protests last September. The panel held Oli responsible for failing to prevent police firing that killed at least 19 protesters on the first day of the unrest, which ultimately led to his resignation. The arrests occurred one day after rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was sworn in as prime minister, with Shah's Rastriya Swatantra Party's landslide election victory fueled by public anger over the protest deaths. Oli, 74, was transferred to a hospital from the police office, with his lawyer deeming the arrest illegal and improper.
