Pregnant women and cancer patients at risk from ultrasound delays 12h ago

Experts are warning of potentially life-threatening delays for pregnant women and cancer patients due to a significant shortage of sonographers across England. The Society of Radiographers (SoR) reports a 24.2% vacancy rate nationally, escalating to 38.2% in some regions, with an additional 7.6% of sonographers planning retirement within the year. This shortfall impacts essential services, forcing hospitals to reallocate staff, which in turn delays urgent foetal growth scans and initial cancer diagnostic investigations. The SoR highlights that this workforce deficit undermines government plans to reduce waiting lists and improve cancer detection, as sonography is a critical first step in diagnosis and follow-up care. The South East of England faces the most severe shortages, with nearly two in five posts vacant.
