8th-grader makes discovery about tumors during school science project 1d ago

Eighth grader Anushka Sable has made a significant discovery during a school science project, finding that microplastics present in human immune cells can lead to the formation of tumor-like structures. Her research, conducted with a mentor at Emory University, involved exposing human monocytes to microplastics and observing their uptake of these particles. Further investigation using a 3D cell culture revealed the development of tumor-like formations, suggesting a potential link between microplastic presence in the body and cancer risk. This finding is particularly concerning given that microplastics have been detected in various human organs, including breast milk, placentas, and kidneys. Sable's work highlights the need for further study into the health implications of microplastic exposure and potential mitigation strategies.
