Girl, 5, Seriously Injured in Freak Accident Involving Hotel Pool Drain on Family's Last Day of Vacation 6h ago

Five-year-old Paloma Quatrini was critically injured in a pool drain accident at the Punta Mita Resort in Mexico during her family's vacation in February 2025. While playing in a shallow kids' pool, the drain's protective cover allegedly malfunctioned, trapping Paloma with immense suction that caused severe internal injuries, including the ripping of her small intestine. Her parents, Carolina Velez and Adam Quatrini, struggled to free her and locate an emergency shutoff. Paloma underwent extensive medical treatment, including over a dozen surgeries, at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and now requires ongoing parenteral nutrition. Her family has filed a lawsuit against Hayward, the designer and manufacturer of the pool drain, seeking damages exceeding $150,000.
