China's land has shown significant improvement in productivity and ecological resilience over the past three decades, according to a comprehensive "health check-up" of the nation's soil by the China Geological Survey. Analyzing over 500,000 data records from 1995 to 2023, the National Land Geochemical Monitoring Report 2025 found that 92.6 percent of land areas were rated medium grade or above in 2023, a 0.4 percentage point increase from 1995. This improvement is attributed to ecological protection projects like the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program and increased organic carbon levels, which rose from 6.7 to 7.8 grams per kilogram, particularly a dramatic 141 percent surge on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The stability of soil's "skeleton" elements and a slight increase in essential macronutrients and micronutrients further indicate a healthier land foundation, contributing to food security and mitigating the greenhouse effect.
