Rabies has been confirmed in Lanka town, central Assam, following a mass dog bite incident on March 26, where approximately 40 people were attacked. A team from the animal care centre at Sonapur, led by an integrated bite case management officer and five animal handlers, was dispatched on March 28 to investigate, collaborating with local veterinary officer Momi Gogoi. During their investigation across multiple affected areas, the team discovered two suspected rabid dog carcasses. Samples from an exhumed domesticated dog were tested at the JBF Integrated Care and Resource Centre and subsequently at the Animal Rabies Diagnosis Laboratory and the College of Veterinary Science, Guwahati, confirming rabies infection. Three out of six closely examined bite cases were found to be associated with rabies, highlighting a significant public health concern that necessitates ongoing awareness and vaccination efforts.
