Judge delays Luigi Mangione’s federal trial 01.04.2026

US District Judge Margaret Garnett has denied a request to delay the federal trial of Luigi Mangione, 27, who is accused in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione's attorneys sought a postponement until 2027, citing concerns about preparing for the federal case while simultaneously defending him in a state court trial. Judge Garnett slightly modified the federal trial dates, pushing jury selection to October 5 and opening statements to October 26 or November 2, stating she was skeptical of delaying the federal trial significantly due to the ongoing state proceedings. The federal trial is expected to commence approximately four months after the scheduled start of his state trial for second-degree murder and other charges, which occurred in December 2024 in Midtown Manhattan.
