EVN Panel at Tufts Addresses International Developments Concerning Armenia 04.04.2026

EVN Report hosted panel discussions at Tufts University, Harvard University, and Georgetown University in March, featuring experts Nerses Kopalyan, Areg Danagoulian, and editor Maria Titizian. The Tufts panel, "Power Transition in the South Caucasus: Armenia between Peace and Development," explored Armenia's evolving geopolitical landscape, marked by a shift away from Russian dominance towards increased involvement from the US, EU, France, Iran, and Turkey. Discussions highlighted the US's long-term strategic interest in the region, particularly through the Middle Corridor initiative. A significant focus was placed on Armenia's energy security, with a $5 billion project to acquire US nuclear technology via a 123 agreement, aiming to replace the aging Metsamor nuclear power plant and strengthen ties with US industries, potentially diminishing Russian influence. The panels also addressed the complexities of Armenia-Azerbaijan peace negotiations, Armenia's policy of diversification, and the potential impact of regional conflicts, such as the Israeli-US war on Iran, on peace prospects.
