Amnesty, Civil Society Demand Apology, Retraction From Wike Over Threat Against Channels TV’s Okinbaloye 04.04.2026

Channels Television

Global human rights organization Amnesty International and fourteen civil society groups, including the International Press Institute, have condemned Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike for his verbal threat against Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye. The incident occurred on Friday, April 3, 2026, after Okinbaloye expressed concerns on his show "Politics Today" that Nigeria was trending towards a one-party state, particularly in light of the Independent National Electoral Commission's derecognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership. Wike, during a live media chat, stated he would have "shot" Okinbaloye for his remarks, which Amnesty International described as "reckless and violent" and demanded a retraction and apology. The civil society groups echoed this sentiment, asserting that such rhetoric undermines press freedom and contributes to a climate of fear for journalists in Nigeria, which ranks 122 out of 180 countries in press freedom.
