India's overall crime rate has fallen by 6.0% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with a total of 58.86 lakh cognizable crimes recorded. This decline is attributed to increased public investment, digitization, and enhanced surveillance measures, including a significant rise in CCTV camera installations across cities. Cybercrime, however, continues to be a growing concern, potentially exceeding 1 lakh cases. Crime against women has also seen a slight reduction of 1.5%, though the SBI report indicates the scale of the challenge remains substantial. The report further highlights a positive correlation between reduced crime rates and economic growth, suggesting that a decrease in crime can lead to approximately 0.11% higher real GDP growth in the short run.
