Waitrose worker fired for confronting shoplifter stealing Easter eggs 06.04.2026

Walker Smith, a 17-year employee at Waitrose's Clapham Junction branch, has been dismissed after confronting a shoplifter attempting to steal Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs. Smith, 54, intervened when he saw the individual with a bag full of the chocolates, leading to a brief struggle where the bag broke and its contents spilled. In a moment of frustration, Smith threw a piece of a broken chocolate bunny. Waitrose stated that current reports do not reflect the "full facts of the situation" and emphasized their policy against staff intervention in thefts due to the serious danger involved, citing past incidents where employees were hospitalized. Smith expressed feeling demoralized by his dismissal, describing Waitrose as "like my family" and highlighting his frustration with the frequency of shoplifting. The incident occurs amidst a reported rise in shoplifting offenses across England and Wales.
