Suspects in ISIS-inspired attack outside NYC mayor’s residence believed they could kill up to 60 people, prosecutors say 10h ago

Two U.S. citizens, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, are facing federal charges for an ISIS-inspired attack planned near New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence on March 7. Prosecutors revealed that the suspects detailed their intentions in a notebook and audio recordings, expressing a desire to "start terror" and "petrify these people." Balat predicted they would kill between 8 to 16 people, potentially up to 30 to 60 if the area was crowded. The indictment, released Tuesday, outlines eight crimes, including providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction. Although no devices detonated and no injuries occurred during the anti-Islam demonstration and counterprotest, the NYPD stated the attack was capable of causing serious harm. Evidence recovered from their vehicle and a Pennsylvania storage unit included bomb-making materials and explosive residue.
