Greece announces social media ban for under-15s 08.04.2026

Greece will implement a ban on social media access for children under 15, effective January 1, 2027, as announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This initiative aims to combat rising anxiety, sleep disturbances, and the addictive nature of online platforms, with Mitsotakis highlighting concerns about excessive screen time, constant comparison, and parental reports of children's struggles. The Greek government has already banned mobile phones in schools and established parental controls. Greece aims to be a pioneer in this area, with the intention of advocating for similar measures across the European Union, following Australia's lead in banning social media for under-16s. Several other European nations, including Slovenia, Britain, Austria, and Spain, are reportedly developing comparable legislation.
