Nine classrooms at Riverlea school lost to overnight fire 08.04.2026

A devastating fire on Tuesday night destroyed nine classrooms at Riverlea Secondary School in Johannesburg, impacting approximately 320 pupils who were relocated to the school hall for lessons. This marks the third fire incident at the school, with previous damage occurring in April last year and in 2007, raising concerns about security and ongoing neglect. Arson is suspected, with the damage estimated at R45 million. The Gauteng department of education cited budget constraints and existing infrastructure challenges as reasons for delays in repairs, despite providing mobile classrooms previously. Community members and officials expressed frustration over the recurring vandalism and the school's inability to operate at full capacity, emphasizing the urgent need for improved security and upgrades.
