JPMorgan strikes carbon removal deal that doubles as wildfire prevention 09.04.2026

JPMorgan Chase has entered into a significant 10-year agreement with Graphyte, a carbon removal startup, to purchase 60,000 tons of removal credits. This deal, which includes an existing project in Arkansas and a planned facility in Arizona, not only advances the carbon removal industry despite policy challenges but also offers a dual benefit of wildfire prevention. Graphyte's innovative method involves compressing agricultural and forestry waste and storing it underground, effectively sequestering carbon. The Arizona facility will utilize material from forest thinning projects, directly addressing wildfire risks in areas like Flagstaff, which has experienced devastating fires. This initiative highlights a growing trend among climate startups to emphasize co-benefits like environmental protection and job creation as federal support fluctuates.
