Mom Sentenced After 14-Year-Old Son Fatally Hit a Cyclist While Driving Under the Influence to Pick Up a Package 10.04.2026

Erika Martinez-Ramirez of Bellmead, Texas, has been sentenced to two years in prison for endangering a child after her 14-year-old son fatally struck a cyclist while driving under the influence. On July 14, 2024, at approximately 1:30 AM, Martinez-Ramirez sent her son to retrieve clothes, during which he hit and killed 67-year-old Dennis Welch and subsequently crashed into a home with his 10-year-old sister in the car. The teen, who had been stopped twice previously for underage driving in 2023, was found to be intoxicated. Prosecutors pursued the endangering a child charge due to its similar punishment range and ease of proof compared to criminally negligent homicide, as they could not prove Martinez-Ramirez knew her son was intoxicated.
