Nurses at KNH to down tools Monday, lobby warns 12.04.2026

Nurses at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) are scheduled to commence a strike on Monday, as announced by Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary General Seth Panyako in Kisumu on Sunday. The industrial action stems from persistent issues including prolonged salary delays, unresolved bank deductions, and stalled pension payments, with some nurses reportedly experiencing unstable pay for four to six years due to systemic payroll and cash flow challenges. Panyako highlighted that salaries are often immediately absorbed by banks for unrectified loans and deductions, and also criticized the failure to disburse pensions to retired health workers. He characterized the problems as systemic failures within the public health sector's financial management, impacting essential services like medicine supply and patient feeding, and also opposed the prolonged reliance on casual staff over long-serving nurses. This planned strike, the first for KNH nurses, is expected to severely disrupt services at the nation's premier referral hospital if no agreement is reached.
