'Addicted to hacking': Young hacker behind historic breach speaks out for 1st time, before reporting to prison 14.04.2026

Matthew Lane, now 20, has spoken out for the first time about his role in the historic PowerSchool data breach, which compromised the security of 60 million children and 10 million teachers. At 15, Lane was already a malicious hacker, describing his actions as "addicted to hacking" and rooted in his own insecurities. The breach, which involved threats to expose sensitive personal information and ransom demands totaling millions, prompted high-level government briefings. Lane, who used stolen credentials to access PowerSchool systems and lease servers in Ukraine for data transfer, is now reporting to federal prison in Connecticut. He acknowledges the severity of his crimes, which he funded with "ill-gotten gains" spent on luxury items and drugs, and expresses remorse for the widespread impact on students and educators.
